Prime Minister James Marape unveiled the team name at the Santos National Football Stadium, just before the annual men's match between the Australian Prime Minister's XIII and PNG. The Chiefs emerged as the winner from a public competition with over 20,000 entries, beating the short-listed Pythons.
It was a joint decision by the PNG and Australian governments, with the Australian Rugby League Commission and the team's board giving their seal of approval. But why 'Chiefs'? Marape explained that it's a nod to PNG's rich cultural heritage. With over 850 languages and 1,000 tribes, PNG is a nation of diverse communities, and the title 'Chief' holds a special place in their history.
