MSNBC Live Stream News â USA
American News Channel
Launch, Ownership and History
MSNBC (an acronym for Microsoft/National Broadcasting Company) is a US-based news cable and satellite television network that reports news from NBC.
MSNBC channel and MSNBC.com were launched in 1996 from a unique alliance between Microsoft Corporation and General Electricâs NBC. Although MSNBC and MSNBC.com kept a single name, they were very different organizations with different operational structures and goals. Microsoft later pulled out its investment in MSNBC in 2005 and exited msnbc.com just seven years later.
In 2015, MSNBC altered its programming list and schedule to establish a closer partnership with its parent company, NBC News. Due to the new closer operational ties with NBC, MSNBC changed its programs and operations to suit its new ownerâs goal.
MSNBC Carriage Issues
AT&T U-verse and Verizon FiOS television subscribers in parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York City couldnât view MSNBC before 2010. One major reason for this was the contract between Cablevision and MSNBC that prevented competing service providers from accessing the MSNBC network.
Verizon reached out to the Federal Communications Commission in 2009 seeking the dealâs termination as it argued that the arrangement was illegal. The arrangement was later canceled, and Fios entered into an agreement with MSNBC that broke the monopoly.
Audience, Ratings, Reception, & Demographics
MSNBC is an ideal definition of a successful TV channel as research suggests that over 90% of TV subscribers receive MSNBC.
MSNBC has a very interesting demographic as a 2019 Pew Research shows that 90% of MSNBC viewers are above 55 years.
The median age of their viewers is 68 years, prompting many broadcasting experts to believe that itâs a TV channel thatâs fast losing relevance.
Pew also noted that over 95% of regular MSNBC viewers are Democrats by political inclination.
MSNBC & NBC News
To help revive the networkâs declining rating, MSNBC shifted its focus to hard news programming from left-leaning opinionated programming. The channel replaced its hosts with NBC news anchors as they were perceived to be less partial and more central in their opinion. Some NBC News personalities introduced to the platform include Kate Show, Chuck Todd, Jose Diaz-Balart, and Brian Williams.
To improve its perception further, the channel launched an ad campaign in April 2016 where MSNBC portrays itself as an in-depth news reporting channel instead of the phraseâtalking pointsâ thatâs synonymous with the channel.
Top MSNBC Shows & Hosts 2021
The Rachel Maddow Show

Apart from being a TV host, Reid is also a public speaker and best-selling author. Reid starts this prime-time lineup by hosting discussions on American politics as they pop up.
Deadline: White House with Nicolle Wallace
The breakout star of the Trump era is undoubtedly Nicole Wallace with her show Deadline: White House. A former member of the Bush administration where she was White House Communications Director, and the former McCain campaign aide who prepped Sarah Palin in the 2008 Presidential Campaign would seem to be a strange fit for the network, but her âNever Trumpâ stance and criticism of the Republicans have hit a cord with the MSNBC Live audience. Her show is so popular that she was given a second hour by the network back on August 19th, 2020.
MSNBC Controversies & Criticisms
Keith Olbermann
In 2010, Olbermann was suspended for donating $2,400 to each of the three Democratic candidates during the 2010 midterm election. Under NBCâs laws, its employees cannot get involved or donate to political parties without first getting permission from the company.
Chris Matthews
Chris John Matthews is a retired American talk show host, author, and commentator. His weeknight hour-long talk show (Hardball with Chris Matthews) was highly controversial due to his demeaning comments about women involved in politics. Some of the women he has disparaged comments about include Melania Trump, Sarah Palin, and Hillary Clinton, often due to their private lives or appearance.
Brian Williams
NBC suspended Brian, a multiple award-winning Anchor, for six months in 2015 for misrepresenting some events while covering the 2003 Iraq war. Four months after, he was demoted to a breaking news anchor for MSNBC.
