Mojito Mocktail Recipe (1)

Love mocktails? Be sure to try my watermelon mocktail for a refreshing summer drink and my cranberry mocktail with pomegranite and mint that’s perfect as a holiday punch!

This past summer one of our neighborhood friends invited us over for mojitos! She had tons of mint growing in her garden, and wanted to use it up!

What better way to enjoy mint than in a mojito, am I right?

However, we didn’t have any rum, and neither of us really felt like making a trip to the store.

So, what did we do? We decided, to make a mocktail version! Added bonus was the kids could sip on them too while they ran through the sprinklers!

What is in a mojito?

A mojito is typically a combination of mint, lime juice, white sugar, club soda, and white rum. The mint, lime, and sugar are muddled together at the bottom of a glass, then topped with ice, club soda and rum.

This mocktail version leaves out the rum, and uses a refined sugar free substitute to add a touch of sweetness.

What is the difference between a mocktail and a co*cktail?

A mocktail is a drink that mimics a co*cktail but is non-alcoholic. It typically consists of a mix of ingredients. It’s a called a mocktail because it is a “mock” co*cktail. Mocktails are generally less expensive, lower in calories, and suitable for all ages since they are non-alcoholic.

What is a mocktail made of?

The ingredients in a mocktail will vary depending on the type of drink you are mimicing. They typically contain sodas, sparkling water or club soda, a variety of juices, as well as fresh ingredients and herbs. These ingredietns are mixed together in a balanced way, to create a fun and delicious non-alcoholic drink!

Fresh Mint: You’ll need 10 fresh mint leaves for each drink.

Lime Juice: Use a fresh lime, cut in quarters.

Club Soda: Adds bubbles to this drink that makes it feel like something special!

Maple Syrup: Adds a hint of sweetness. No refined sugar necessary!

Ice: To keep this drink cool and refreshing, you’ll want to fill your glass all the way to the top with ice!

How to Make a Mojito Mocktail – Step by Step

Step 1: Place 10 large mint leaves at the bottom of a glass. Add the juice of half a lime, and the maple syrup. Muddle them together for about a minute. Muddling crushes the leaves and releases the flavor and oils of the mint.

Top Tips for Making the Best Mojito Mocktail

  • Use fresh lime juice. Muddling the lime and mint together releases the oils and flavor of both the mint and lime, giving this drink a distinctly tart flavor.
  • If you do not have a muddling tool, use the back of a wooden spoon.
  • If you want to make this for a crowd no problem! Adjust the serving sizes, and use a large pitcher to muddle the lime and mint. Then add the club soda, and pour over ice. You can also muddle the mint and lime in each individual glass, but that will take you some extra time, and if you’re having a party, you want to enjoy your guests!

Variations and Substitutions

  • Add Fresh Fruit: If you want to put a unique spin on this mojito add fresh fruit such as blackberries or raspberries. Add a few berries to the bottom of the glass and muddle with the mint and lime, then garnish with a few berries on top.
  • Don’t have fresh lime? You could substitute limeade for lime juice. Limeade is already sweetened, so you won’t need to add the maple syrup.
  • Make it alcoholic: Add 1 ½ oz of white rum to each serving.

How to Serve

This drink is best served in the summertime! It’s loaded with light, cool, refreshing flavors! It’s low in calorie, and doesn’t weigh you down in the least! Since this is alcohol free, you can enjoy a few on a hot summer day!

I suggest serving this drink at a picnic, BBQ, or leisurely weekend at home.

Serve over ice, and make fresh! This is not the kind of drink you want to make in advance. The club soda will lose its bubbles, and the ice will water down the drink!

I suggest serving these mojito mocktails in a highball, or rocks glass, garnished with a sprig of mint and a wedge of lime! Throw in a colorful straw to make this even more festive!
