Are the Bulldogs building a dynasty? It certainly looks that way as they've just announced a significant strengthening of their squad! The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have officially welcomed three new players – Sean O’Sullivan, Gordon Chan Kum Tong, and Fletcher Baker – all set to don the blue and white in the 2026 season. This could seriously shake up the NRL!
First up, we have Sean O’Sullivan, a seasoned halfback with a wealth of experience. At 27 years old, O’Sullivan brings 60 NRL games worth of grit and tactical awareness to the Bulldogs. He first burst onto the scene in 2018 and, notably, was a key part of the Penrith Panthers' triumphant 2022 Premiership-winning team – a team that also featured current Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo! He then became a foundation player for the Dolphins, spending the last three years honing his skills in Queensland. But here's where it gets interesting... O'Sullivan is fresh off leading the Norths Devils to the Queensland Cup Grand Final. He's signed for the 2026 season with a mutual option for 2027, meaning both he and the club have to agree to extend his stay. This indicates a degree of confidence, but also a potential 'wait and see' approach. Will he live up to the hype?
Next, we have Samoan international Gordon Chan Kum Tong. He's joining the Bulldogs from the Manly Sea Eagles, where he played 14 NRL matches after making his debut in 2023. What makes this signing particularly special is that Chan Kum Tong is a Bankstown Bulls junior, meaning he's returning to his roots! He'll initially join on a development contract, giving him time to further refine his skills and integrate into the Bulldogs' system. But the plan is for him to move into the top 30 squad in 2027. This is a smart, long-term investment in local talent. And this is the part most people miss: nurturing local talent often builds a stronger connection between the team and the community, something that can be invaluable.
Finally, we have Fletcher Baker. Fresh off a Queensland Cup Premiership win, Baker has signed a one-year development deal with the club. The 25-year-old has spent the last two seasons with the Brisbane Broncos. Don't let the 'development deal' fool you though, this guy has serious experience. He boasts 60 NRL appearances since his debut with the Sydney Roosters back in 2021. What makes Baker particularly valuable is his versatility. He can play both in the middle of the park as a prop, or on the edge as a second-rower, giving the Bulldogs coaching staff plenty of options.
Bulldogs General Manager of Football, Phil Gould AM, is understandably delighted with the new additions. "We’re very pleased to welcome Sean, Gordon, and Fletch to the Bulldogs family," he said. “Sean has proven to be a reliable half in the NRL with a great footy IQ, which we believe will be beneficial for the young playmakers in our squad.” Gould continued, “Gordon has only scratched the surface of his potential, and we’re excited to see where he can take his game, while Fletcher brings valuable experience and depth to our squad after spending time in other successful systems.”
But here's where it gets controversial... Some fans might argue that signing players on development contracts who already have NRL experience is a way of circumventing salary cap pressures. Is this smart business, or does it potentially disadvantage younger players coming through the Bulldogs' own ranks? What do you think about these signings? Will O'Sullivan's experience be enough to guide the Bulldogs to the finals? Is Chan Kum Tong the next big thing? And will Baker's versatility be a game-changer?
