Imagine a world where a child's smile is the strongest medicine. This is the reality for one family, where a young boy's unwavering spirit became the lifeline during his sister's battle with a rare eye cancer.
In September 2024, little Hollie Robinson-Mellor, from St Helens, Merseyside, received a life-altering diagnosis: retinoblastoma. This aggressive cancer primarily affects children under the age of six. At just one year old, Hollie faced the heartbreaking reality of having her right eye removed to save her life. Now, at two, she continues to be closely monitored to ensure the cancer doesn't return in her remaining eye, which also showed signs of tumors.
But here's where the story takes a turn from tragedy to triumph. Hollie's five-year-old brother, Ted, became the family's rock. Their father, Kevin, shared that Ted "single-handedly kept the whole family going" simply by his unwavering positivity. He wakes up every morning smiling and being himself, providing a beacon of hope for everyone around him.
Kevin emphasized how proud they are of both children, highlighting Ted's loving relationship with his sister. Since Hollie's diagnosis, Ted has consistently treated her with the same affection, always looking out for her and defending her. He even supported her in the hospital after her operation, helping her take her first unsteady steps in the corridors. He'd lie with her, watching her favorite cartoons on an iPad, making sure she could enjoy them.
And this is the part most people miss: The family's journey began when Colette, the mother, noticed something unusual during Ted's fourth birthday celebration. The flash from the camera revealed a white gleam in Hollie's right eye. This prompted an appointment at an eye clinic, where a specialist suspected retinoblastoma. The family was then referred to Birmingham Children's Hospital, the leading treatment center for retinoblastoma in the north of England, where Hollie's diagnosis was confirmed.
Kevin recalls that they initially resolved to stay strong for their children. However, as time went on, they realized that Hollie and Ted were the truly strong ones. Hollie's resilience, getting up and playing like any other one-year-old, gave them the strength to face each day. He remembers a particularly difficult day, Hollie's first MRI scan coinciding with Ted's first day of school. Ted's cheerful attitude and excitement about his day provided the family with the strength to get through that challenging time.
In recognition of their remarkable bravery, both Hollie and Ted have been named CHECT Champions by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT). Richard Ashton, the chief executive of CHECT, praised their "wonderful courage and resilience."
While retinoblastoma is rare, CHECT urges all parents to be aware of the symptoms, including a white glow in the eye in certain lighting or flash photos, or a squint (lazy eye). If you notice anything concerning, seek medical advice immediately.
