Are you a Kenyan working abroad? If so, listen up, because this is crucial: The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) is urging all Kenyan workers overseas to register with their country's diplomatic missions. Why? Because as Kenya increasingly becomes a labor-exporting nation, proper documentation is more important than ever.
COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli emphasized that registering with Kenyan Embassies, High Commissions, Consulates, and Permanent Missions in your host country is vital. This ensures that the Kenyan government can assist you if you face any challenges. Think of it as having a safety net, ready to catch you if things go wrong.
"It's a matter of importance that our workers abroad are properly documented and recognised through official government channels," Atwoli stated, highlighting the importance of official recognition. This means the government can offer timely protection, assistance, and accountability.
But here's where it gets controversial... Atwoli also cautioned Kenyan activists against exporting their activism beyond Kenyan borders. He warned that such actions could lead to foreign legal consequences and potentially harm the welfare and reputation of other Kenyan workers.
He cited examples of distress calls received by COTU from Kenyan workers abroad, concerned about activists' actions. For instance, on May 26, 2025, Atwoli addressed the press, warning activists in Tanzania about the discrimination Kenyan workers were facing due to this trend. Work permits were being terminated or not renewed because of the activists' behavior.
Atwoli also pointed out that it's unfair to blame the Kenyan government if individuals experience problems abroad without following proper documentation procedures. He stated that those who leave the country without following protocols and respecting the laws of other nations shouldn't seek sympathy from other Kenyans who were unaware of their departure.
Furthermore, Atwoli warned that mistreatment of Kenyans within their own country by foreign nationals would not be tolerated, and such individuals should be deported immediately.
COTU is committed to protecting the dignity of Kenyan labor both at home and abroad. They urge all workers to be law-abiding ambassadors of Kenya wherever they go.
